Singing and dancing from a very young age, Hayley Gayne began studying classical violin seriously at age 8. As a violinist, she performed with the Maryland All-State Orchestra and led the Annapolis High School Orchestra as concertmistress. She received the Music Medallion from Annapolis Senior High School and the Friends of Annapolis Symphony Orchestra Award. By the time she was 18, she had also performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. After graduating from high school, Hayley worked and traveled to Western Europe, Northern California, the Virgin Islands and Japan. During this time, she realized her passion for writing and singing. Hayley applied to Berklee College of Music and was accepted as a voice principal and songwriting major. At Berklee, she focused her studies on vocal pedagogy and performance, and lyric and melodic songwriting. She modeled and sang in local restaurants to support herself through college. Hayley was on the Dean’s List often and graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2005. Since graduating from Berklee, Hayley has performed with small jazz and pop ensembles. In 2007, she was a featured singer with Adriel Azure and His Dream Indigo Orchestra, a 10 piece gypsy jazz band including triple female vocals. This endeavor taught her a great deal about vocal harmonies, choreography, arrangements and team work within a large band. Hayley currently resides in Boston where she works at Music Management.

Q:Who do people say you sound like? A:I've heard everything from Stevie Nicks when I was singing a blues song in a bar, to Natalie Merchant, Annie Lenox and Laura Nyro. I can't completely hear them in my voice, but I certainly take it as a compliment!
Q:What about your songwriting? Who are your influences? A:Tori Amos is my biggest influence. Bob Dylan. Depth in the lyrics is important to me, but I read somewhere that John Mayer said, songwriters make up their minds in the beginning whether they want to be understood or not. I'd like to be understood, but I don't know!(laughs) I guess I'd like to write both ways: straightforward like in "I Wish I Was" and also with many meanings in each line, like in "One Way Out".
I listen to reggae and hip hop a lot. Bob Marley's "Waiting In Vain" is one of my favorite songs.
Q:Who do you want to sound like? A:I don't know... like myself, but better!
Q:What made you want to become a writer? A:There's a place I've been...there are moments I've had that I feel are too beautiful to be lived only once, or too painful to be left unsung.
